JUROR - A N G E L I N A • V I L L A L O B O S ( 1 7 9 )

My work follows a quote from local KEXP VJ Gabe Teodros "If a tree can't grow there, I can't grow there" highlighting the struggle of what it means to grow in difficult spaces. My work often depicts nature and animals thriving in the manmade circumstances of their mural sites; industrial areas, urban landscapes, etc. Places where we might overlook the order of nature. I accomplish this by using color fluidly; selecting palettes from the area around me and playfully experimenting with shades, complimentary colors, and my favorite, neons! My figurative work lends itself to the imagination, for example how a wolf would appear in a fantastical technicolor dream. My goal is to always experiment and play with shapes and color, bringing the outside in.

With over 10+ years of experience, I am a Seattle-based Latine muralist, painter, educator, and illustrator. My passion lies in creating murals that bring life and meaning to the spaces they inhabit. Drawing inspiration from my upbringing as an Americanized Mexican Catholic in the Pacific Northwest, my work beautifully blends elements of graffiti, anime, folklore, and fairytales.

As an artist, I am deeply mindful of how art can positively impact the community. I cherish every opportunity to engage with the community and create vibrant and captivating murals that leave lasting impressions. My ultimate goal is to design safe and beautiful spaces for community members, fostering mindfulness and meaningful connections through my art installations.

One of the aspects I truly love is working with youth, challenging their brilliant minds to consider their roles in the rapid growth of our city. I believe that art has the power to shape perspectives and empower the next generation.

My journey into the world of art began with a pursuit in Graphic Design, but I soon realized that I wanted to create art that extended beyond the boundaries of a computer screen. After working over a decade with Art Primo, an online graffiti supply company, I transitioned from being a part-time artist to dedicating myself fully to mural work.

Driven by my passion, I founded House of the Wolves, named after my last name Villalobos. As a small business, I specialize in creating vibrant murals for a diverse range of clients, including Meta (formerly Facebook), The Seattle Seahawks, Climate Pledge Arena, and The Seattle Kraken."

Dia de Los Muertos Community Celebration!
Oct

12:00 PM12:00

Dia de Los Muertos Community Celebration!

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a vibrant community celebration honoring both los muertos and the beauty of life. Day of the Dead celebrations began in Central America, and have roots in indigenous and Catholic traditions. Sweet sugar skulls, bright colors, and bitter-smelling cempazuchitl (calendula, or marigold) flowers evoke vibrant, ephemeral life and bitter, inevitable death–embracing both.

Each year Tieton Arts & Humanities creates one huge community altar and we invite everyone to add to it. Visitors can bring photos of loved ones, write messages, and bring mementos, candies, or breads. This provides a special opportunity to remember the special people in our lives that are no longer with us.

This year’s celebration will be Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 12 to 5 pm.

The Día De Los Muertos Exhibition runs from November 1st to November 16th, 2024 at the Mighty Tieton Warehouse.

Gallery Hours: Fridays and Saturdays 12pm - 5pm or by Appointment.

For more information and details about the event, check out our event calendar and sign up for our email newsletter.

LiTFUSE Voices of the Dead

Date and Time: Friday, November 3rd from 6:00pm - 8:30pm

Location: Mighty Tieton Warehouse

Details: Come celebrate Día de Los Muertos with LiTFUSE! We will have live poetry readings and an open mic!

Tamara Saluskin, a Yakama Nation Tribal Member, will open up LiTFUSE Voices of the Dead with an opening prayer to lead into the poetry reading and open mic with featured poets Alexus Mendoza and Jesus Sandoval.

Tamara Saluskin --

"I am an enrolled Yakama Nation Tribal member, raised and educated in Wapato. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree at WSU and later received my MSW at the University of Washington. I have been working with the Yakama Nation for the past 12 years. My ancestral lineage includes 2 of the original signers of the Yakama Nation Treaty of 1855. If there is a single word I would use to define myself it would be "resilient" thanks to all of the prayers made on behalf by my grandmothers and parents. Now, I have the strength and teachings to pray for myself and my children. My hope is that blessings and the spirit of resilience will continue for generations to come."

Alexus Mendoza--

Alexus Mendoza is a queer Latinx poet from the pacific northwest. She is a Professional and Creative Writing major at Central Washington University and is working on publishing her first chapbook. While new to the poetic scene, she blends nature, cultura, and family into the molcajete of her creative works. As the second generation born from immigrant grandparents, she has strong roots in her Mexican heritage while also exploring what it means to be of mixed ethnicity. She is a multicultural seed planted in a garden bed obsessed with labels looking to speak from the place between Mexican-American.

Jesus Sandoval--

Jesus Sandoval was raised in Buena, WA. He is a National Board Certified Teacher and a graduate of Toppenish, Oregon State University, Heritage University, Grand Canyon University, and most proudly, The School of Hard knocks.
