Some background

Since 2007, Tieton Arts & Humanities has demonstrated that imaginative programming and community participation can improve the quality of life for many residents in our community and visitors in our region. It has remained a small, nimble, and responsive organization that takes advantage of opportunities, adjusts scale and programming as times, tastes, and community needs have changed.

Michael Schein started LitFUSE: A Poets’ Workshop, the original TA&H program. For over a decade it welcomed poets from the region and beyond for high-quality three-day classes and readings around Tieton.

Art in the Park started in 2008 as an initiative focusing on arts and crafts experiences for local children during the summertime vacation. It has grown into creARTe, a successful initiative offered all year long in partnership with the Highland School District and Tieton Arts & Humanities and Classrooms for the 21st Century. TA&H recognizes the importance of exhibiting artwork by local students from all grade levels. The Student Art Show continues every spring with an exhibition in the Mighty Tieton Warehouse. For more information

TA&H’s most popular annual event is the Día de los Muertos celebration on the last Sunday each October from noon to 5:00. Free to the public, it features music, dance, art, food, vendors, popular culture, poetry, and a community altar to honor loved ones who have passed. It has become the biggest Day of the Dead event in the Yakima Valley. For more information

TA&H’s latest initiative is being the fiscal sponsor for Tieton Radio. Community based, it runs 24 hours per day and features amazingly diverse music, announcements, and interviews with longtime locals.

Over its 15-year history, the annual juried exhibition 10 × 10 × 10 x Tieton displayed thousands of small works from around the world. It was a popular exhibition and fundraiser for TA&H.

For several years, TA&H hosted the Portal Project, an initiative of local artist Janice Laverne Baker. She collected art supplies from generous donors in the area and made them available to the CreaARTe team and local schools.

TA&H has also hosted concerts with local and regional musicians in the Ring Room in the Mighty Tieton Warehouse. It has also collaborated with the sound artist Trimpin, whose Sound Space in the Warehouse has been a popular and ever-changing attraction.
